The only downside from that performance is the fact that Lanzini looks finished. Hopefully there will be some interest from China/Arabs to get a fee.

Those cunts needed a win after Fulham's result. I don't think Fulham will survive either but it put pressure on the other two teams down the bottom. Sheff Utd and WBA are almost certainly down now. Fulham have an outside chance but that's all.

The fact neither of them could beat us when we were there for the taking at times tells you all you need t know about why they have had poor seasons. In fact, in both games against Fulham and Sheff Utd they will probably feel they should have got more than they did.

One team took its chances last night, the other didn't. We have no strikers but they looked the most toothless. The fact Moyes brought Noble on and effectively said to Sheff Utd "come and have a go but you won't do anything" tells us how confident we were that the game was in the bag at 2-0.

The result flattered us, in all honesty. However it was nice we took our chances when we got them, which we don't usually do.

Had McGoldrick now been a sunday league player, they could have easily scored twice.

I'm just absolutely gob smacked we were given a penalty.

I've got no beef with Chris Wilder. He seems a decent manager and bloke. But for me, an added delight last night was the fact that judging by his post-match interview, he clearly thought last night's was the result that has effectively relegated the detestable Blades.

Which was nice.

Our run-in is actually rather favourable. Hang in there the next month or so and we could really be in for a decent final league position.
Finally, we seem to be beating the teams we ought to be beating and not just turning up for big games. 12 from 15 points against the bottom three is a decent marker of where we are.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sheff U - Official Match Thread
Sheffield strangely lapse defensively. Caught on the counter for the first goal ( but also down to the speed that we broke ) , not very good marking for the second although it was a lovely whipped in corner from Cresswell ( arc on the ball etc.). The 3rd one they were a beaten team and the room Fredericks got was nice.

But IMO they were not shite in most other aspects of their play. They are going down because they cannot finish, have no one that can really score goals other than an ageing Billy Sharp who spent most of his career in the lower leagues.

Their approach play was good and they dominated possession and a better team may have taken 1 or more of 3 gilt edged chances. No they were not shite. 2nd season and a few injuries and they were found out before Xmas.

That said, we are finding ways to beat the struggling teams and as others mention the more desperate for points the better as they have to take the game to us more and that allows us to counter which is our strength.

Spurs will be an interesting one. Kane will target Cresswell at the back post in the air again which he did last season and Cresswell was the one that Mcgoldrick got above last night too. No Ogbonna shows, again as many others also point out, in the air. He also throws himself to block like Dawson does. While Diop was sound and his passing much better ( perhaps its been worked on ?) aerially and physically he still looks like a weakness. Not one to throw himself to block or dominate in the air. He does have a bit of pace which might be useful against Son.

Anyway, best thing will be a real tough game for Spuds and demoralising defeat on Thursday.

To be fair Rice's one almost won us a penalty

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sheff U - Official Match Thread
enjoyed that last night - many positives as pointed out here---if there is a niggle, its on direct free kicks.....we seem to have reverted to a " i'll give it a go" and i cant recall when we last scored direct--- cresswell has been trying to get his one-a-season wonder going and had generally been awful- he went for one at fulham which was never going to work (left footed , from the left around the near side to the front post) this free kick and against liverpool ( i think ) him and Benrahma stood over the ball and anyone who's seen him play knows its Benrahma's go-to, he puts it over the short side of the wall and gets it down , cresswell pushed him out of the way. Last nice Delan took a free kick from an excellent position , probably the perfect spot, and its basically a timid back pass at an easily saveable height.

Must do better

If you had said after the Newcastle game by mid feb we'd be 2 points clear of Liverpool you would have probably been sectioned

Great performance, everyone played well. Sheff Utd were dogshit but still nice to get a 3-0. Lingard easily MOTM for me, Dawson and Rice also get mentions. Johnson grew into the game really well, but first half was far to negative on the ball and when receiving it. Needs to receive it on the half turn alot more and get in behind the RB more. Plenty of positives though for Spurs on sunday, hopefully Antonio back......but if not and we play like we did last night we have a great chance.

Thought we played so well going forward that we may be able to give Antonio a couple of weeks rest so he can come back revitalised for the season run in.

Many on here got this one very wrong before the game, very wrong indeed! Mmmm.

Johnson a big positive. I remember Terry Westley use to rave about him and was convinced he would make it. let's hope he's right.

I'd be shocked if relegation isn't already sorted. Newcastle may gate-crash but I can't see outside those four.

For the rest it's pride and position money, and European places. 5th will be very, very tough though.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sheff U - Official Match Thread FT 3-0
Playing against the bottom three is unique because they desperately need three points. One point is worthless to them. So they'll come and attack, which is perfect for our counter-attacking style.

The teams who are just above the relegation zone are a tougher prospect. A draw is fine for them, so they'll be happy to sit back.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sheff U - Official Match Thread FT 3-0
A relatively comfortable win tonight. I think that reverting to wing-backs was a good move. (And the team apart for Lanzini instead of Benrahma is what a few of us thought should have started). I thought we generally played the system and kept our shape well. Although we didn't look as solid without Ogbona's presence.

As some have already said we didn't dominate in the air at the back. and better opposition might have caused problems.

Diop scored a good goal and hopefully, that will boost his confidence. I thought (understandably) he looked a bit uncertain to start, particularly passing it out from the back.

Plenty os movement from the front three with Lingard looking a real threat with great pace. Really pleased for Fredericks and his cameo. His recent involvement has been his best since joining. Is this another player that Moyes is revitalising?

We look better playing on the break and I think Moyes has rightly worked it out that we don't do so well when we go on all-out attack. Certainly against lesser sides. Not sure we can concede so much possession to the better sides as they will make more of it (as Liverpool did).

I think Moyes is really getting it right, at the moment long may it continue. Some tougher games on the horizon but as Moyes says hopefully there is more to come COYI

We are West Ham. History tells us that for us, and us alone, 42 points is not enough to guarantee safety.
